Supporting at Further Education Level

My own complex art journey has driven my interest in supporting young artists, craftworkers and designers and indeed shapes my research interests and teaching philosophy.  I’m all too aware of the challenges that face students as they try to make sense of passions, develop talents and contemplate career and study choices. Now in my late 40s I’m not only able to offer creative directional support and technical advice across a range of mediums including painting, drawing, mosaic, sculpture, ceramics and various other art and crafts forms but I have a wealth of experience and skills including business acumen, marketing and communication expertise that can be passed on. This page highlights some of the different ways that I am able to support students at Further Education level.

Creative Product Development

Over time, hobbies can lead to refined craft skills and product making. Small enterprises can turn into bigger enterprises and occasionally into international exports.

As a multi-discipline artist I can offer a range of art or craft taster courses or can support in developing programs and tutor recruitment. For further details get in touch.

Self Promotion For Creative Practitioners

Practical sessions could potentially be run to develop CV/biographies, business cards, to discuss the creation of personal brand or identity, to create an on-line portfolio or how to use social media. My particular expertise is in supporting students in writing about themselves, planning and developing their own brand/identity across various platforms. I can also provide an overview of marketing techniques and how to self promote on a shoe-string. it would be better to run this alongside DTP basic training or as part of a workshop to create basic promotional material or to explore new media or social media to discuss how this can support promotion.

Business Skills for Creative Practitioners

Workshops and talks, or weekly classes on business skills to help you develop and market your creative product on a shoestring. Click for more information.

Exploring Creative Pathways

This is an area that I am particularly passionate about. I have a range of e-documents which document my practice development from GCSE to present in detail both in terms of painting and book and educational projects as well as my own development and unfolding research interests. The best format for delivery is a talk and presentation on a select aspect of my practice with questions and answer sessions. Its also possible to run mentoring and portfolio critique sessions.

In an ideal world I also want to get under the skin of numerous further education colleges to really enhance my ability to offer advise to students on which colleges might best suit and carve out a role between colleges to support the best placement or recruitment of students.

Portfolio Critiques & Advice

I’m able to support in portfolio preparation. Portfolios themselves need development over time to ensure weaknesses are identified and supported or that different types of work are encouraged. My own skills lies in spotting and helping students to build on strengths or helping students to identify paths that are most suitable to explore.

Art History

I have a right hand person, Tony Cato who works with me on a number of projects. He has an amazing ability to explain complex art historical concepts in simplistic terms. He is also brilliant at explaining routes into academic essay writing. Over time we plan on developing talks and workshops to teach complex art theory in simple terms. Tony has a greater writing craft than myself and there are occasions and we are best working as a team.
