Artist’s statement

I’m a second generation painter living and working in Margate in Kent, since 2014. My primary painting medium is oils and over the years my painting style has evolved from realism to smudgy colourist paintings which speak more of how I feel rather than see.

Recent works are inspired by short walks to Margate Sands, less than 5 minutes from my studio. This small stretch of beach provides a rich supply of subject material, particularly in Summer with ever changing compositions made up of human shapes and colour.

Back in my studio I stylise figures, devise my own compositions and play with colours and shapes to somehow re-capture the overall mood or impression. There are time when overcrowded scenes are simply breathtaking and yes, I’m still building up to create those scenes..

Beauty, strong shapes, colour and people at leisure in nature characterise my work. The shift to soft and fuzzy has commanded the discovery and employment of techniques and devises to enhance the pictorial quality including colour development and for an extended period my work ran close to impressionist in appearance. As an artist I’m continually seeking to develop my style and to reach new ground. These demands keep me constantly engaged as a painter.
